Names That Count: The Cultural Calculus of Naming in India

This paper investigates the deep-rooted connection between personal names and societal consciousness in India, specifically focusing on the widespread presence of ?mathematical names? across the subcontinent. The authors propose that the persistence of such names reflects the enduring legacy of India?s rich mathematical heritage. To establish this link, the paper begins by outlining key contributions of Indian mathematicians in six domains: geometry, trigonometry, numeration, arithmetic, algebra, and Vedic mathematics. These mathematical concepts, often drawn from classical texts, are shown to have influenced contemporary naming practices.
