SARASWATHAMRUTHAM: The Ayurvedic Companion to Artificial Reproductive Techniques
This book presents a unique exploration of Ayurveda, fertility, conception and healthy progeny, bringing together the wisdom of the classical Samhitas, Vedic literature and Upanishads with the possibilities of modern reproductive medicine and Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART).
Drawing from Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya, Ashtanga Sangraha, Kashyapa Samhita, Bhavaprakasha and other classical sources, the book explores Ayurveda’s understanding of Shukra, Artava, Beeja, Ritu, Kshetra, Ambu, Garbha, Garbha Samskara, Garbha Poshanam and Ojas and their place in the journey towards healthy progeny.
Beginning with Prajanana and Garbhotpatti, the book examines classical concepts of conception and the formation of life, placing them alongside contemporary understanding of reproductive biology. It explores preconception preparation, parental health, Garbha Samskara, maternal nourishment, fetal development and Ojas, providing a holistic perspective on the journey from preparation to birth.
Classical descriptions of Garbha Vikasam and month-wise fetal development are discussed alongside modern embryological perspectives, while selected insights from the Vedas and Upanishads provide a philosophical dimension to the understanding of life and progeny.
The book then enters the contemporary fertility landscape, introducing infertility, IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technologies and exploring how Ayurvedic principles may potentially serve as a complementary framework alongside modern fertility care.
Rather than presenting Ayurveda as a replacement for IVF or modern medicine, this work proposes a thoughtful integrative approach, focusing on areas such as preconception health, nutrition, lifestyle, reproductive wellbeing, maternal nourishment and supportive care.
Ultimately, this is a journey from Beeja to Garbha, from Garbha Samskara to IVF, and from ancient Indian wisdom to contemporary reproductive science.
It seeks to build a bridge between two knowledge traditions and explore how Ayurveda may serve as a meaningful companion in the modern journey towards conception, pregnancy and healthy progeny.
This book therefore proposes an integrative clinical perspective in which Ayurveda and modern reproductive medicine can engage in dialogue while respecting the strengths, limitations and evidence base of each system.
